Policy Dialogue Workshop  “Are manufacturers in Tanzania losing out in an expanding health sector market? If so, what can be done about it?”

REPOA hosted a policy workshop on 25th November 2014 that brought together industrial and health policy makers, and other key stakeholders in the supply chain of pharmaceuticals and other medical supplies to discuss and consider evidence from a research project entitled  “Industrial Productivity, Health Sector Performance and Policy Synergies for Inclusive Growth: A Study in Tanzania and Kenya”.  The study was recently conducted by REPOA, in collaboration with the Open University UK, and the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) in Nairobi, and RAND-Europe, and is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The overall objective of this research was to identify ways in which improved local industrial production within Tanzania and Kenya of pharmaceuticals and essential medical supplies and equipment can contribute to improved health sector performance.

High level round table: Improving health sector performance in Kenya and Tanzania: Is there a future  for the local manufacturing industry?


The African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) in collaboration with Research for Poverty Alleviation (REPOA) Tanzania, and the Open University (UK) recently held a high level round table policy dialogue on 17th September 2014 in Nairobi, the dialogue sought to share results from a research project on “Industrial Productivity, Health Sector Performance and Policy Synergies for Inclusive Growth in Tanzania and Kenya”. The study aims at identifying policy options and incentives for enhancing the supply of essential pharmaceutical and medical products in order to strengthen national health system performance in the two countries.

Policy dialogue workshop: Improving the Supply Chain for the Health Sector: What Role for Local Manufacturing?

Date: June 27, 2013 

The project partners, ACTS, The Open University, Rand Europe and REPOA organised a one-day Policy Dialogue Workshop on 27 June 2013. The workshop hosted by REPOA discussed research findings with various other stakeholders from government ministries and departments/agencies, district health care facilities, research institutions and pharmaceutical manufacturers in Kenya and Tanzania.
